Welcome to Pattern review 'McCall's 2159 Today's Mother Pinafore B' This pattern was actually the first of the three I purchased, and that's because I saw this cute little pinafore on Shein and thought, that's what I want to wear for my baby shower!
Unfortunately it didn't come in orange, and orange was the color I wanted. Remember that orange faux sued fabric from the Aang costume I made awhile back?
Well I do!!! And here's a picture so you can too! Lol, anyways I had some leftover and decided this would be a good time to use it up.
I scoured the internet in search of a maternity pinafore pattern and came across this McCall's on on ebay and thought, this could work.
As you can see it's not an exact match, but that's ok.
The Alterations: I had to shorten the bib, because I am short. I also added a wide waistband so it would look more like the one from Shien.
I strung the waistband with an appropriate sized elastic picked up from my local Joann's. By the way, the Woodland Joann's is where it's at! Almost as wonderful as the Temecula one, if your a local I highly recommend!
The last change I made was to the straps, instead of buttons, I just made button holes in the bib and knotted them, I chose to criss cross them in the back because I'm very narrow, and otherwise my straps have a tendency to slip down my shoulders.
The Sewing: Everything else I kept the same following instructions.
I started by attaching interfacing to the bib, then lining it. I then attached the bib to the waistband. The skirt I sewed a set of patch pockets, I'm usually very lazy about putting in pockets, but so far I've given everything I made pockets so go me!
I gathered the skirt and attached it to the waistband as well. Finishing the waistband after adding in the elastic. Hemmed the skirt and voila!!! All done
Okay so technically this has nothing to do with sewing. But it was my baby shower, and I thought it'd be fun if our little family matched! I found this skeleton shirt at Walmart, and Fitz's little pumpkin shirt is from Petco. My black shirt is from H&M's maternity collection. They don't carry any in store but can be purchased online. I thought we made quite the pretty picture.
There's not a great picture of them but for those wondering I'm wearing patent leather Dansko shoes to complete my look. Back in the 1st trimester my husband said I should buy some slip ons that way I had time to break them in before I got big.
He actually picked the dansko brand because the nurses at his work recommended them. It's not like I spend long hours on my feet these days (whom I kidding, my line of work most of the time I'm seated at a machine anyways lol) but if I'm going to be on my feet and want to wear nice shoes those are the ones!
Review: Alright time for my review! I was about 28 weeks while working on this, it went so quick and smoothly. The fabric I chose was a little on the heavy side and still I was able to crank it out. Even with all the changes I made. I would definitely recommend this pattern for a novice or beginner! If you can string elastic and make a button hole you should have no problems! Happy sewing guys!!!
