Happy Holidays!!! With Christmas just around the corner (and Baby due to show up any day now) I've started some light decorating. This is our first Christmas as a married couple, and my first year managing a house, so I decided to keep things as simple as possible.
The main thing I wanted to focus on this year was my table, so I've been all a buzz getting it together!
Tablecloth
I started with the tablecloth, my table with the extension is 36x 64 inches which is perfect our little house. I purchased 2 1/2 yards of 45 width green sew classic cotton from Joann's. I wanted a solid table cloth so I could use it for multiple holidays just by changing out the runner or placemats. I measured out 82 inches and then tore the fabric (just like in 'Over the Moon') giving me a piece of fabric measuring 45x82.
I did a simple 5/8 inch rolled hem around the entire thing and called it good. Unfortunately when I put it on my table I noticed it was a short on the sides 😕
I headed over to Amazon and ordered a six inch wide lace, comes in 5 yards which should be more than enough.
It turned out to be a stretch lace which is exactlywhat I didn't want. 🫤 But it's hard to find a wide lace in green so I made it work by sewing slowly (careful not to stretch the lace) and using a zig zag stitch along the length on both sides of the tablecloth.
I finished the ends again with a rolled hem.
I think it turned out pretty good, what do you think?
Runner
Hubby actually helped me pick my runner fabric.
We went with this Green Snowflakes Christmas Foil Cotton. I purchased 2 yards it comes in 43 inch width giving me a 43x72 inch piece of fabric. Since I wanted my runner 15in wide I measured out 17in wide (to allow for hem) made a small snip and tore the fabric (much like I did in my Over the Moon post) I also measured out the length to 66in.
This left me with a fabric strip of 17x66 following along?
Next I sewed a 1/2 inch rolled hem lengthwise on either side.
Right sides together I folded the fabric in half lengthwise, matching up the hems and sewed a 3/4 inch along the raw edge.
Clip the folded corner.
Lay flat and press that center seam open creatinga point. Press the sides down and make a small tack through all layers. Repeat on the other side.
Now you have a pretty runner for the center of the table.
Placemats
No table is complete without placemats, I looked for a free pattern on Pinterest but couldn't find anything that really spoke to me. So I went to my cupboard and found my biggest set of plates.
Using the fabric leftover from my runner I first traced my plate on the wrong side, then I added 1 1/2 inches all the way around. Here's where I hit a snag, I need 12 circles to make 6 placemats, but I only had enough fabric for 8. So back to Joann's so I could pick up a little extra fabric, I bought another 3/4 because I forgot to bring one of my circles to layout.
Turns out that was the exact amount I needed thank goodness! Which means for future reference to make runner and six placemats I actually need 2 3/4 yards.
Putting two circles right sides together I sewed them with a 1/4 seam allowance, leaving a small gap to turn later.
I then notched the seam allowance (you do this to create ease in the seam when you turn it, so it will lay flat instead of being crowded). I then turned it right side out.
Next I pressed the whole thing flat, and sewed a nice topstitch around the circumference closing the hole, and giving the whole thing and nice finish. You can always dress them up more if you like, but I'm pretty happy with the overall look.
And finally I put it all together, Baby ought to be here any day now and then Christmas, thankfully I'm ready for both!!!!
Merry Christmas and Happy Sewing, may all your projects turn out better than expected!
Update: Baby arrived about 9 days early which means this is my last post for awhile. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!!
